I just realised something unflattering about myself: I’m getting too big for my boots.
A friend asked if I would publicise the potential closure of an important course run at the Centre for Deaf Studies at Bristol University. Well perhaps, I said grandly, but I’d have to consider the context for my readers in putting a post together that would fit my blog. Just who do I think I am? Sorry, J.
Let’s just be brief and straightforward, shall we?
Dear reader:
Bristol University currently run a BSc in Deaf Studies. The course is threatened with immediate closure. It’s the most highly thought of course in deaf studies in the United Kingdom, and trains interpreters to a very high standard. The students are passionate about sign language and about their involvement with the deaf community.
This is an extremely important course that creates positive outward ripples nationally and internationally.
There’s an online petition to try to save the course. If you feel you can lend your support, I’d be extremely grateful. The link to the petition is below and it will only take a minute of your time.
Save BSc Deaf Studies, Centre for Deaf Studies
If you could pass on the link to anyone you think may be interested, that would be great as well.
Thank you!

Thanks for the information! I work at an sign language interpreting business in the United States and support interpreters all day long. More education, more awareness, and better interpreters for Deaf folk worldwide are good things!

My first teaching job was at Rochester Institute of Technology in upstate New York. It is co-institutional with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I had deaf students and usually a signer in my classes. I was grateful for the education in teaching that such a situation provided. I learned never to turn my back on students while I am lecturing.
I am not sure what a Canadian resident’s signature is worth, but I support the petition.
Thank you all for your support on this, it’s much appreciated. Shannon, Barbara, your experiences are very interesting indeed, thanks. I just think that anything that encourages both awareness and genuine communication is of vital importance.

I had no idea such a program existed. Very cool. I’ve signed and I do hope they keep it!
Thank you for this post. I have forwarded on.
Thank you, and welcome to my blog Silver Fox.
