Baha’i persecution in Iran

Iranian Baha’is

Not often I post twice in one day, but this is an urgent appeal for help.

As you may have read in the press, the Baha’i faith in Iran, the country of its birth, is under pressure of persecution.

On 14th May 2008, six leaders of the Baha’i community in Iran were arrested and imprisoned, so far without charge. You can read about it at Barney’s excellent blog here, and on the BBC today here.

As far as I know, all regular readers of this blog are lucky enough to live where we are allowed the freedom to worship, or not, as we choose. I am not a Baha’i, but I stand with these six people.

Amnesty International have today launched an appeal for intervention with the Iranian authorities. Please write, respectfully, to the addresses listed here on the Amnesty page, following their guidelines. You can do it by email, I just did and it only took me 20 minutes.

Thank you.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I wasn’t aware of this.

Barney, you’re welcome.
Andy, I don’t know why I’m still surprised by the sort of religious intolerance being shown in Iran and elsewhere, of all kinds of faiths and beliefs, but somehow I am. It’s horrible, isn’t it?
