It’s Earth Day today. I didn’t know until I read Beansprouts. I don’t know about you, but it’s easy to get a little confused here. We had World Water Day recently, and Earth Hour.
These are all wonderful worthy occasions that draw our attention to important things, and they all come down to the same thing: we are killing our own environment. But the occasions don’t mean anything unless we change. Each one of us.
Living more simply can be a joy, not a hardship. My all-time favourite book on the subject is Marian Van Eyk McCain’s Lilypad List. Perhaps you could mark this year’s Earth Day by getting a copy from your library.
And remember that all consumerism is consumerism. Green is just better, not God. Check out this funny but telling video, found at No Impact Man:

Thank you for the book recommendation. I’m going to look for it the next time I’m at the library. as well as check the bookstore down the street.
You’ve written a great Earth Day post. Concise and completely true. Occasions are easy; behavior change is very difficult.
….just finished watching the video. Funny and disturbing. I wasn’t aware of all the facts presented after the humour. Thank you for sharing this.
What I take away from your post and a few other similar ones I read today is I need to radically shift from being a consumer to a conserver, maybe even a producer, when and where possible. Have you read Gayla’s post at You Grow Girl? I think you would like it.
Elaine, thanks for the pointer to Gayla’s post, I’ve just now had a chance to read it and yes, it’s really good.
I’d stopped subscribing to YGG for a little while because there are so many blogs I read, but I’ve put it back on the list.
Thanks for the video – it was a little uncomfortable to watch the whole thing. We are greedy, so greedy, it’s not just uncomfortable, it’s downright embarrassing!
