E is for…

ELucy is continuing a game in which we are given a letter and choose ten words beginning with that letter that mean something to us. She has allocated meĀ  the letter E because I’m her English friend.

E is for…

England. Means something to me because I live here. There’s a lot about this country that irritates me intensely: our absurd anachronistic system of monarchy, the unabashed evil of our tabloid newspapers, our continual harking back to our glorious (huh!) past. But I love the multi-culturalism of our cities, the creative force of our artists and writers, our freedoms (which are now under threat) and the beauty of our countryside.

Elephants. I just love them. The world would be a poorer place without them. And I have no words foul enough to describe those who still kill and desecrate those magnificent bodies for their tusks.

Eagle. Far-sighted, vibrantly alive, free.

Effervescent. It’s such a lovely word.

Eve. Firstly Eve the first woman. She should never have let on to Adam that she’d picked that damn apple. Secondly eve in the sense of the day before. I think there are many times the anticipation of the eve before is as special as the day itself.

Earth. Gaia our precious mother. We must stop trying to destroy her.

Energy. What a great gift our human energy is, and how we miss it when it hides for a while or disappears through illness.

Enemy. You know what they say: keep your friends close and your enemies closer. And perhaps if you keep your enemies close enough, you will come to understand them, and they will become your friends. Hmmm, long way to go on that one!

Enkindle. Because if we can kindle the flame of passion for life in ourselves, we may be able to enkindle it in others, and think what a change that would bring about.

Enjoy. Because I believe we were put on this earth to be happy. Not in the sense of a kid getting a five-speed bike for Christmas, but in the sense of living in deepest joy like the warmth of the sun. The sun may go behind the clouds, but it is always there.

Lovely choices, Tess. This is a fun game — especially for those of us who ENJOY expressing ourselves in words. I added whimsy and wiggleroom to my list of also-rans! Thanks, Lucy for passing this along!

Yes, Barbara, I enjoyed yours as well. I thought of another E just after publishing: Earwig. Just because it’s such a wonderful name for an insect.

This is a gorgeous collection of E words Tess. I just used “effervescent” this morning to describe how I am feeling (always happens at the start of our vacation time together). Much love to you, Christine

Great job Tess. I’m still struggling with my “S” – still, struggling – well, I’m getting there.

oh, tess, what an exciting, expressive, ever-passionate list of E’s. i love it!! instead of being all gushy and sentimental, it has both the yin and yang about it. i’m with you and christine, i love “effervescent”…it reminds me of a couple of years ago, i was at my friend’s yacht club (rooty toot toot :-) ) and a somewhat “sloshed” man looked me directly in the eyes and said, “you are effervescent & cognizant.” i have never forgotten those words. but, i digress and this is about you not me :-)
fabulous list, my dear! thanks for playing.

Thank you folks. Christine: I hope you have a wonderfully fizzy vacation time. SS: how about snake, lots of biblical and wisdom possibilities? Lucy: I think the sloshed man was absolutely right!

I enjoyed your “E” list Tess and am pleased to meet you in this way. I look forward to returning when time permits to get better acquainted. I had an exchange teacher from England who validated me as a writer and provided me with a pen pal with whom I exchanged letters for decades. I’m about to post my “P” list on Small Reflections (if Lucy gives me another letter I may do one at Sacred Ruminations also) as soon as I finish adding links to everyone else’s lists to spread the fun .
Hugs and blessings,
