The eighth candle

On December 4th I wrote about light: for the first Sunday of Advent and for the first day of Hanukkah.

Today the Festival of Hanukkah comes full circle and the eighth and last candle on the Hanukkah menorah is lit.

I say the eighth and last candle, but we must not forget the shammash, the ninth, servant candle from which the others are lit. Jewish Hermit says some interesting things about this servant fire in his November post.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, King of the universe, who wrought miracles for our fathers in days of old, at this season.
