On Tuesday afternoon this past week I had a conversation with a colleague in which we pontificated about people having time off work because of minor illnesses. I did most of the pontificating.
I put forward the theory that all these coughs and sniffles are just a case of mind over matter and a bit of self-discipline. There may have been a certain self-righteousness tone in my voice…
Wednesday:
- I wake up feeling not quite right. Find it difficult to concentrate at an early-morning conference. By midday, feel shivery and full of aches and pains. By 14:00 feel horribly weak. By 15:00 I know I have to go home. Get home at 17:00 and sleep for three hours. Get up for an hour and go back to sleep.
Thursday and Friday:
- No way on earth could I drag myself into work, even if I lived ten minutes away. Can hardly get out of bed all day. Can’t eat, body aches all over, tummy upset, head thumping.
Saturday:
- Finally beginning to feel a little better, get out of the house to do some shopping, manage to drink some tea and keep some boring biscuits down. Soup later.
Sunday:
- Pretty much better today, still a bit tired.
So, God, I suppose you thought that was a pretty funny stunt to pull, huh?
Normal service on this blog will now be resuming. God willing.

Tess, I am so glad you are better and back to blogging! My personal attitude toward minor illness is that I’d rather someone stay home so they don’t get me sick (oh and so they can take a little R&R that their bodies are asking for).
Tess,I’m so glad you are feeling better! Hey, for what it’s worth, I pontificate too. I often say that “unless I’m bleeding and lying by the side of the road I’ll be there”. I’m pretty committed to the things in my life and I get kind of peeved when people crumple over the littlest thing…but then I remember that I should have mercy. LOL
Hi Tess. I too am glad to hear you’re getting better. Sniffles are one thing, but it sounds like you were down with a bad flu, something even the strongest self-discipline and dedication can’t overcome.
Thanks everyone, much appreciated.
I’m glad you are better. I love those little reminders that we get from time to time…
Ha! You learned that lesson the hard way, didn’t you? Glad to hear you’re feeling better now.
