Martin LutherOn this day more than 500 years ago, Martin Luther was born in Germany. It was a life of controversy, not least for his appalling writing on Jews.

But he is an object lesson for anyone who thinks that one person alone cannot effect lasting change. By praying, thinking, asking questions, writing and speaking out, he changed the course of Christianity.

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.

It will blossom in the Spring, my Minnesotan friend.

Reminds me of a line from one of my favorite movies, A Man and a Woman. The man tells the woman, as they are walking on the beach one evening, that Giacometti, the sculptor, when asked which would he save from a burning building — a great painting or a cat? He replied that he would save the cat. I have loved Giacometti ever since.
