Bravery

Yesterday I read about two different kinds of bravery.

First via Barney’s excellent blog I learned about Dr Randy Pausch, a young man with a family, dying of pancreatic cancer. Sounds grim, doesn’t it? But it is totally uplifting. The guy is realistic and totally without self-pity. There’s a video of his last lecture to his students. He tells them (and us) among other things that if we just give people long enough, they will show us their best side. A compassionate reminder I know I need.

And second, I learned from Towanda about the movement to transform Columbus Day in the States, to recognise that Columbus was a slave trader responsible for genocide. She and her friends showed enormous bravery as their peaceful demonstration was broken up violently by Denver police. You can read her account of the day here.

Dying bravely, living bravely: these are two interesting and moving posts. You should read them.
