This being human is a guesthouse;
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all.
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house
Empty of its furniture.
Still treat each guest honourably.
She may be clearing you out for some new delight
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
Meet them all at the door laughing and invite them in
Be grateful for whatever comes
Because each has been sent as
A guide from beyond!

“Still treat each guest honourably.”
Yes, yes, yes.
Peace,
Milton
Such a beautiful reading and message. At the beginning of my days, I attempt to open my “guesthouse” doors with prayer and optimism. I started to write with hope, but optimism is a better word for me. Even if the dark guest arrives, I believe the prayer and optimism will work together against that dark guest – can’t keep it out, but with God’s help, containing it may be the best one can do on some days.
