I was really saddened to see the end of a story of miscarried justice which was widely reported in the U.K. at the time. The mother was imprisoned for killing her two children and was later found to have been falsely convicted. Now she has been found dead at 42. I don’t know any of those involved, nor do we know the cause of death, but how does a family survive after what they went through?
I was struck by the musings on a Stubborn God over at Kicking and Screaming. I have so often experienced what he describes: that God gets closer the more I back away. I am fearful though that one day I’ll back away too far.
Me at Those Northern Skies really struck a chord with her post Leaving a mark. She asks:
Don’t you too find yourself doing things gratuitously, with the hope that someone will notice or that somehow what you did will last; that you will have left your mark?
Yes, I do. And taking this thought further, I was once asked whether, if I could create the greatest work of literature in history, I would be content in the knowledge that I had done so if no-one would ever read it. Such an inconveniently knowing question! Strikes me as a little bit like the biblical passage about the alms-giving hypocrites with their publicly pious faces. Oh dear.
Today is Mother’s Day in England, so I chose this post from Britt-Arnold’s Blue Cafe blog last weekend, which shows the lovely connection between her and her daughter. Today I went to lunch to mark Mother’s Day with my sister and her son, together with my sister’s fiance. And I remember my darling mother, who died 17 years ago.
And finally:
You Are Midnight |
![]() You are more than a little eccentric, and you’re apt to keep very unusual habits. Whether you’re a nightowl, living in a commune, or taking a vow of silence – you like to experiment with your lifestyle. Expressing your individuality is important to you, and you often lie awake in bed thinking about the world and your place in it. You enjoy staying home, but that doesn’t mean you’re a hermit. You also appreciate quality time with family and close friends. |
